What is In Your Neighborhood 2023?
This March, the National Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with different communities in Ward 5 to amplify joy, unity, and shared humanity through music and the arts. Partnering with local schools, museums, and organizations, we will honor the history of these neighborhoods, while also building new connections and relationships.
Events are open to the public with first-come, first-served seating, unless otherwise noted.

TUESDAY, MARCH 7th
Introduction to Music Concert

Marissa Regni, Principal Second Violin
Joe’s Movement Emporium is a cultural and creative arts center that bridges the gap between under-resourced families and those with means through their arts-based youth programs. Marissa Regni, NSO violin, will engage with students in the community through an introduction to music show for kids.
Bass Quartet Performance

Boundary Stone is a neighborhood pub where community members gather to watch music, drink, and enjoy good food. A bass quartet from the NSO will perform while patrons enjoy their night.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8th
Yoga Class with Harp

Bluebird Sky Yoga is a community-based and arts-inspired yoga studio in Brookland. Their studio space offers a variety of classes and also includes a gallery that features works from local artists. Adriana Horne, harpist for the NSO, will perform live during a yoga class. In celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, this class will also offer the opportunity to donate to N Street Village, a local non-profit that supports women who experience housing insecurity.

Violin Duo at Art Gallery

11:Eleven Gallery is an art space specializing in UK contemporary and urban art. The gallery focuses on amplifying work from under-represented and emerging artists, both locally and from the UK. Natasha and Zino Bogachek will perform original compositions for violin duo that center around different types of stylized dances.

Woodridge Public Library is a welcoming space and provides resources and events to kids, teens, adults, and seniors. Mahoko Eguchi, NSO viola, and Rachel Young, NSO cello, will perform in collaboration with a local poets for Women’s History Month.

Flute Duo During Clay Workshop

District Clay is a clay studio that offers lessons to adults and kids, masterclasses, a ceramic gallery, and more. Carole Bean and Alyce Johnson, NSO flautists, will play for a class, while the ceramic students work on their projects.
String Duo at Historic Cottage

Lincoln’s Cottage is a historical museum that preserves Lincoln’s legacy and emphasizes our shared responsibility for justice and humanity. Mahoko Eguchi, NSO viola, and Rachel Young, NSO cello, will perform on this historic site with music that inspires longing and memory.

Performance at Local Coffee Shop

Creative Grounds is a community space that inspires conversations about the arts, while also serving delicious and locally sourced coffee and food. Musicians from the NSO will perform in collaboration with a local author for Women’s History Month.

Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

The Basilica is one of the ten largest churches in the world, serving the Brookland community and beyond. The full NSO will perform in this holy site with conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser.
SATURDAY, MARCH 11th
Brass Quintet Concert

Busboys & Poets is a restaurant, bookstore, and cultural hub, with nine locations across DC. Used as a community gathering space, Busboys and Poets attracts artists, writers, visionaries, and people from all walks of life. A brass quintet with members of the NSO will perform in collaboration with a local poet.

With the motto, “food is fashion,” The Spice Suite blends spices and herbs for home-cooks and chefs alike. The Spice Suite has also become an incubator for small businesses across DC and have hosted more than 450 free pop-up shops for Black-owned businesses. Two NSO violinists, Ben Scott and Meredith Riley, will perform at this unique location in Langdon.

Brass Quintet Performance at Spring Festival

Norooz Market is a spring festival with local artists, vendors, food, and live music. Opening up the 5th annual Norooz Market, a brass quintet with musicians from the NSO will collaborate with two local poets and perform at the American Poetry Museum.

Stop by early to enjoy swag-bags, workshops, and resources, with a special performance by three NSO Youth Fellows! Ward 5 Mutual Aid will be providing groceries and resources for the community, Stephanie Kiah will be hosting a mandala art making workshop, and the NSO and Wells Fargo will be giving away free swag-bags, popcorn for the concert, and books for all ages!

La Cosecha is a contemporary Latin American market that celebrates centuries of cultures with food, shops, and more from Venezuela, Mexico, Panama, Brazil, Peru, and more. Come join us for a lunch-time concert as James Nickel and Bob Rearden, horn players from the NSO, perform in this cozy space. Alejandra and Veronica Anzola, violin students from the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative, will open up the concert with Venezuelan music.
Piano Trio Sunday Afternoon Concert

4th St. Church welcomes members from across the DMV and holds in-person and virtual services every Saturday. A piano trio with musicians from the NSO will perform in the afternoon at this local church.

The American Poetry Museum is a community space that fosters poetry as a tool of communication, self-expression, and education. Local poets often collaborate with musicians in this space as a way to intersect both music and writing. Natasha and Zino Bogachek, violinists from the NSO and Opera House Orchestra, will collaborate with two local poets. Kenji Yokote, a piano student from the Washington Musical Pathways Initiative, will close out the performance with some jazz standards on the keyboard.
Violin Duo in Art Gallery

Art Enables is an art gallery and vocational art program dedicated to creating opportunities for artists with disabilities to create and market their work. Natasha and Zino Bogachek will perform original compositions for violin duo that center around different types of stylized dances in their “Spectral Dance Party” exhibit.

String Quartet Concert in Art Studio

Arts Compound is a space that was created for local artists to produce and sell their work in an affordable location. Musicians from the NSO will play in this space in collaboration with a local artist.

Dunbar High School was America’s first public high school for Black students in the country. After the COVID pandemic, Dunbar is in the process of restarting their music ensembles. A string quintet with musicians from the NSO will perform for the student body and discuss the importance of music and the arts.

St. Anselm’s provides students with a rigorous liberal arts background that prepares students for a life of learning and service. A string quintet with musicians from the NSO will perform for the students and give feedback on a student chamber group performance.

Creative Minds takes a global approach to learning, helping students become world learners with an understanding for different cultures, communities, and individuals. An octet with musicians from the NSO will perform and speak with the student body about the arts as the school rebuilds their music ensemble curriculum.

Wheatley Education Campus is committed to making sure every child succeeds by collaborating with different community members, parents, teachers, and staff. A piano trio from the NSO will visit a class of 5th grade music students to play and discuss the importance of the arts.
Little Sisters of the Poor Retirement Home
